But is poverty the only motivatingfactor? The essay also looks into the social forces leadingwomen to migrate. Ethnographic data suggest thatopportunities open to women in the labor force in the eraof free trade do not improve their quality of life. Instead,they have permitted certain levels of empowerment thatallow women to find the resources and the courage toengage in the dangerous adventure of seeking a betterlife in Puerto Rico. The analysis of this process ofmigration opens a window to see migration from adifferent theoretical perspective.
