  • Delegitimizing oppressive culture: the voice of counter-discourse in Umpierre's poetic work Alma Simounet Sociología women poetry counter Umpierre discourse Luz María Umpierre has been a member of the literaryscene within the Puerto Rican diaspora since the early1970s. One of the major contributions of her poeticwork is the construction of a counter-discourse thatboth unveils the oppressiveness of the patriarchalmodel in Puerto Rican culture and unmasks the highlydiscriminatory practices of US culture in its portrayalof Puerto Ricans. Utilizing a sociolinguistic perpectiveand van Dijk’s approach to the critical analysisof discourse, this paper examines Umpierre’s use oflinguistic and rhetorical devices in order to deconstructthe enacting, reproduction and legitimization ofdominance relations by elite groups within cultures. 2008 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37720103 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.1 Vol.XX
