contents Haciendo patria desde la metrópoli: The Cultural Expressions of the Puerto Rican Diaspora Edna Acosta-Belén Sociología music Spanish visual arts language press cultural hybridity This essay provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of Puerto Rican cultural expressions in the United States, with a major focus on the contemporary period. It argues that these cultural expressions represent and affirmation of Puerto Ricanness within the diaspora, reinforcing the vitality of Puerto Rican cultural nationalism beyond island borders and a resistance to assimilation into the Anglo American mainstream. The cultural hybridity of Puerto Rican cultural expressions is illustrated by the analysis of a variety of texts. The essay also documents how at different historical periods, Puerto Rican exiles, sojourners, and migrants found a less repressive space to denounce U.S. colonialism and express their nationalistic sentiments or ideological positions than the one found back on the island. 2009 artículo científico 1538-6279 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=37720842004 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=377 Centro Journal application/pdf The City University of New York Centro Journal (Estados Unidos de América) Num.2 Vol.XXI
