Writings by the Peruvian scientist Luis Carranza indicate how support for a distinctive environmental imaginary of the country’s geography made it possible to conceptualize nature as an essential component of Peruvian identity. As a result, local scientists had to “imaginatively” reshape the nature of the Andes for modernization purposes. The social and political ramifications of these ideas in Carranza’s work were key to the foundation of scientific institutions such as the Geographical Society of Lima. 2023 artículo científico 0104-5970 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=386175072005 https://www.redalyc.org/journal/3861/386175072005/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/3861/386175072005/html/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/3861/386175072005/386175072005.epub https://www.redalyc.org/journal/3861/386175072005/movil 10.1590/S0104-59702023000100006en en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=3861 História, Ciências, Saúde - Manguinhos application/pdf Fundação Oswaldo Cruz História, Ciências, Saúde - Manguinhos (Brasil) Vol.30
