The firstpart of this article examines the origins and evolution of PuertoRican Pentecostalism and Post-Pentecostalism. The latteradvocates the theology of prosperity, preaching a gospel thatpromises financial wealth to converts. The second part of thearticle explores the causes and consequences of Pentecostal andPost-Pentecostal political activism in the island. It explains whykey religious leaders supported the pro-statehood candidatefor governor and political party in the 1992 and 1996 generalelections, and assesses the implications of such activism in thecontext of Puerto Ricos status politics.
