Stark Estudios Culturales slaves Puerto Rico matrimonies eighteenth century liturgical calendar The observance of religious proscriptions associated with theliturgical calendar affected the timing of marriages, while labordemands of the agricultural economy influenced the seasonalityof marriages. For instance, formal unions throughout theSpanish Caribbean, including Puerto Rico, were traditionallyfrowned upon during certain periods of the liturgical year, suchas the penitential seasons of Lent and Advent. Along with thetiming of these, patterns of labor and leisure were also importantin shaping the seasonality of formal unions. This study seeks toexplain when slaves aspiring to marry in the eighteenth-centuryPuerto Rican communities of Arecibo, Caguas, Coamo, andYauco owed more to the exigencies of the agricultural calendarthan to the proscriptions of the liturgical calendar.
