Thepurpose of this study was to access the difficulties experiencedby individuals awaiting coronary artery bypass grafting and todetermine strategies that facilitate adaptation to a new lifestyle,modified by the disease.Methods: A qualitative, exploratory study involvingpatients admitted to a university teaching hospital in the cityof Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, awaiting coronary artery bypassgrafting. Semi-structured interviews were performed inaccordance with a previously defined script based on the studyobjective. Each transcription was read in its entirety to verifythe representativeness, homogeneity and pertinence of the dataobtained (pre-analysis), followed by separation of categories ofanalysis.Results: The descriptions of this study show that patientsadmitted to the completion of coronary artery bypass graftingexperience a wide range of psychological difficulties, consideringthat surgery acquires interpretations that vary according toindividuals’ subjectivity. The patients recognized the benefit ofbeing able to discuss their feelings as a means of diminishingtheir fear and anxiety.Conclusion: Helping patients find resources to confront morepositively the daily hospitalization is an important aspect forthe health care professionals who assist them. This goal can beachieved through modification of the biomedical model of carefor a biopsychosocial view.
