contents So, Morphological Awareness Contributes to Reading in Brazilian Portuguese? Pedro Viana de Freitas Junior Márcia Maria Peruzzi Elia da Mota Psicología non Reading literacy verbal intelligence morphological awareness The present study aims to answer a recently raised controversy regarding the role that morphological awareness has to readingskills acquisition in Brazilian Portuguese. The aim was to investigate whether morphological awareness contributes to readingafter controlling for non-verbal intelligence and phonological awareness in Brazilian Portuguese variables. The study included52 elementary school students enrolled in a public school in the municipality of São Gonçalo, state of Rio de Janeiro. Thehierarchical regression analyses showed that derivational morphological awareness contributes to reading independently ofphonological processing and non-verbal ability. The results of this study indicate that morphological awareness contributesto reading words but not to reading comprehension. The results of this study corroborate with the hypothesis that even in analphabetic language, such as Portuguese, morphological awareness is important to reading acquisition. 2015 artículo científico 1413-8271 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=401043290010 pt http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4010 Psico-USF application/pdf Universidade São Francisco Psico-USF (Brasil) Num.3 Vol.20
