contents Notes on a Disputed Process of Signification. The Practice of Communication in Spiritain Missions in the Central Highlands of Angola Iracema Dulley Antropología Angola Missions translation communication This essay focuses on the practice of communication in the Catholicmissions of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit in the Central Highlands ofAngola, in the territory of the Ovimbundu, from the mid-19thcentury to thepre-Liberation War period in the 20thcentury. Its empirical sources basicallyconsist of translations of Catholic doctrinal material into Umbundu, of collec-tions of oral genres translated from Umbundu into Portuguese, and of ethno-graphic and historic records referring to the period. Based on these sources, the aim is to reconstruct the process of symbolic struggle between the agentswhich gave rise to the convention of meaning established in the missions. Thehypothesis is that this convention was formed by indexing local ritual prac-tices of “ancestor worship” to Christian ritual practices and doctrine. 2008 artículo científico 1809-4341 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=406941906004 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4069 VIBRANT - Vibrant Virtual Brazilian Anthropology application/pdf Associação Brasileira de Antropologia VIBRANT - Vibrant Virtual Brazilian Anthropology (Brasil) Num.2 Vol.5
