Attempts at Comparisons Regarding the Relation Between the State, Religion and Society Emerson Giumbelli Antropología Nation religion modernity The aim of this text is to produce a rapprochement between Brazil andIndia that takes the idea of multiple modernities as its reference. The terrainchosen is that of the relations between the State, religion and society. Thefirst part of the analysis examines how the separation between the State andreligion was put into effect in Brazil and India in legal terms, beginning withconstitutional definitions. In the second part, an analysis is presented of twohistorical situations that occurred during key moments of the constitution ofIndian nationalism and Brazilian republicanism. The point is to show how alink was established between public culture and particular religious referenc-es – Hindu in the Indian case and Catholic in Brazil. In both cases the relationwith modernity is reiterated by these two countries’ different ways of defin-ing “religious” space. 2008 artículo científico 1809-4341 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=406941906008 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4069 VIBRANT - Vibrant Virtual Brazilian Anthropology application/pdf Associação Brasileira de Antropologia VIBRANT - Vibrant Virtual Brazilian Anthropology (Brasil) Num.2 Vol.5
