contents MEDIATING INTEGRATION: LATINO IMMIGRANT ORGANIZATIONS IN GREATER BOSTON Mark Melnik Alvaro Lima Amy Moran Cristina Escobar Multidisciplinarias (Ciencias Sociales) Integration Immigration Organizations In recent years scholars have debated the role of immigrant organizationsin the processes of integration, political incorporation, and transnationalactivities (for example, Huntington 2004; Portes and Rumbaut 2006;Bloemraad 2006; Portes, Escobar and Walton 2006). The currentresearch adds to this discussion through a case study of selectedimmigrant organizations from Greater Boston’s largest Latino immigrantcommunities. Through qualitative interviews with leaders of immigrantorganizations we found that connections and alliances matter forintegration. Immigrant-led organizations are unique because of theirleadership and proximity to the community. Even groups focused oncultural, religious, and transnational activities serve as informal mediatorsin the integration process. They provide practical information, support, and connections to mainstream society. Our findings inform how local governments can leverage the position of immigrant organizations to buildsocial and human capital in marginalized communities. Working withthese informal networks allows the government to increase the efficiencyand quality of its outreach to immigrants. 2009 artículo científico 1980-8585 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=407042010004 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4070 REMHU - Revista Interdisciplinar da Mobilidade Humana application/pdf Centro Scalabriniano de Estudos Migratórios REMHU - Revista Interdisciplinar da Mobilidade Humana (Brasil) Num.33 Vol.17
