This permitted recommendationsfor the sustainable use and preservation ofthese forest types in the Guantiva-La Rusia-Iguaqueconservation corridor (Santander-Boyacá, Colombia). The oak forests correspond to the Quercushumboldtii - Billia rosea major forest formation, which can be categorized into a hierarchical structureof seven forest types. The Q. humboldtii - Ocoteacalophylla forests present in the high Andean fringe(>2200-3200 m.a.s.l); the Q. humboldtii - Alchorneagrandiflora forests, common in the Andean regioninclude two types of forests, Q. humboldtii - Blakeacuatrecasii, and Q. humboldtii - Cyathea multifloraforests; furthermore, these types of forests comprisethe Q. humboldtii - Daphnopsis caracasana and Q.humboldtii - Pouteria baehniana forests. The finalforest type is the Virola macrocarpa - Q. humboldti iforests present in the sub-Andean life zone. Accordingto interviews with members of local communitiesoak forests are considered the main componentsof ecosystems of high cultural and social value. Theinterviews identified two principle uses of oaks, forfuel and for land tenure and property maintenance(fence posts, stakes for crops, timber and toolhandles). According to ecological characterizationand conservation status assessments the Virola macrocarpa- Q. humboldtii, Q. humboldtii - Pouteriabaehniana and Q. humboldtii - Daphnopsis caracasana forests can be used by the community withtechnical prescriptions. The Q. humboldtii - Blakeacuatrecasii and Q. humboldtii - Ocotea calophyllaforests should not be used under any circumstanceand should be subject to strict strategies for theirprotection and ecological restoration. The future ofoak forests is uncertain unless appropriate strategiesbased on the generation of co-management agreementswith local communities for sustainable useand conservation are proposed and implemented. 2014 artículo científico 0120-0739 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=423939621006 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4239 Colombia Forestal application/pdf Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas Colombia Forestal (Colombia) Num.1 Vol.17
