Boron and boric acid are frequentlyused in the preserving solution (PS). To ease theadsorption the culm diaphragm is usually drilledbefore immersion in the PS. We performed a factorialexperiment to determine the possible effectsof drilling the culm diaphragm on compressionand shear strength. Two measures of culm maturitywere considered. The traditional measure is definedby the external features of the culms and another isbased on the time since culm emergence. Varianceanalyses did not show any significant (p > 0.05)difference in mechanical properties when the diaphragmwas drilled. Nevertheless, those culms withmaturity defined using the traditional approach hadsignificantly lower values of compression and shearstrength. In addition, culms with higher moisturecontent were significantly stronger. 2014 artículo científico 0120-0739 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=423939621007 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4239 Colombia Forestal application/pdf Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas Colombia Forestal (Colombia) Num.1 Vol.17
