- Margays also hide their spots: first records of melanistic Leopardus wiedii from Colombia and Costa Rica José F. González Maya Andrés Arias Alzate Ramón Granados Peña Diego A. Gómez Hoyos Jan Schipper Miguel Manjarrés Morrón Gustavo Manjarrés Pinzón Biología Melanism Mutation Wild felids Cryptic species Natural history Melanism has been commonly recorded in tropical felids, especially within the genus Leopardus. However, so far there are no reports of the existence of melanism in Leopardus wiedii. Herein, we present the first report of melanistic individuals of margays, obtained in Colombia and Costa Rica. The low frequency and scarcity of melanistic margay records along its distribution reflect that this is potentially not an ecological or adaptive advantage for the species, and likely the mutation is not established, or even follows a random frequency in the populations. 2018 otro 1870-3453 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=42559305030 https://www.redalyc.org/journal/425/42559305030/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/425/42559305030/html/ https://www.redalyc.org/journal/425/42559305030/42559305030.epub https://www.redalyc.org/journal/425/42559305030/movil 10.22201/ib.20078706e.2018.2.1921 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=425 Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Mexicana de Biodiversidad (México) Num.2 Vol.89
