- Familialism and financial resources in old age. Setting the scene for the use of long-distance assisted care mechanisms in Portugal Alexandra Lopes Sociología The paper examines sorne trends in the living arrangements and in the living conditionsofthe Portuguese elderly. The analysis draws on panel data from the EuropeanCommunity Household Panel and provides a sociological characterization of the livingrealities of the Portuguese elderly in order to ground in empirical evidence the discussionon the interest and viability of technologies to assist the elderly in their homesin the Portuguese context. The main argument of the paper is that in a society stillstrongly marked by traits of familialism, all mechanisms that are based on the idea ofthe elderly remaining in their homes are of potential interest in the sense that they cancomplement and improve the quality of the care provided by families. The secondargument ofthe paper addresses the issue of the financial conditions of the Portugueseelderly and raises awareness for the limitations of any market-based solutions aspotentially triggering furtber inequalities within the care system. 2005 artículo científico 0872-3419 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=426540419016 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4265 Sociologia: Revista da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto application/pdf Universidade do Porto Sociologia: Revista da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (Portugal) Vol.XXV
