Among the cropprotection products applied are: specific and broadspectrum fungicides, nematicides, insecticidesand herbicides (contact and systemic). In CostaRica, with more than 130 years of bananacultivation, both the public and the environmentalcommunity commonly assume that the impactof these products is severe. Banana and cropprotection product industries have been heavilycriticized, assuming that faunal communities arenegatively affected. However, research resultsdo not support this criticism. The present papersummarizes recent published literature stressingthe relative biological impact of the differenttypes of crop protection products used withincultivated areas, and the effects of protected andreforested areas surrounding banana cultivatedareas. It stresses the necessity to consider GoodAgricultural Practices (GAP) involving IntegratedPest Management (IPM) for sustainable use ofcrop protection products without harmful sideeffects,along with conservation or reforestationpractices to protect waterways and farm limits.It also establishes an impact categorizationfor crop protection products based on the biological indicators analyzed, from less harmfulto potentially more impacting compounds, asfollows: herbicides< fungicides< insecticides <nematicides. 2006 artículo científico 0377-9424 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=43630207 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=436 Agronomía Costarricense application/pdf Universidad de Costa Rica Agronomía Costarricense (Costa Rica) Num.2 Vol.30 |
