  • Evidence of Association between Type 1 Diabetes and Exposure to Enterovirus in Cuban Children and Adolescents Luis Sarmiento Ileana Cubas-Dueñas Eduardo Cabrera-Rode Medicina Cuba insulin autoimmunity enteroviruses autoantibodies A possible etiologic role of enteroviruses for type 1 diabetes has been researched for 40 years, but evidence to date is inconclu-sive. This article summarizes new evidence from Cuban research supporting a role for enteroviruses, both in preclinical stages of autoimmune reactions against pancreatic β cells and at clinical onset, in a population with low type 1 diabetes incidence. Possi-ble pathogenetic mechanisms are also discussed, such as acute cytolytic damage and molecular mimicry. Although direct causal effects of enteroviruses in type 1 diabetes are diffi cult to demon-strate, arguments supporting their role in type 1 diabetes patho-genesis should not be ignored; and confi rmation could contribute to development of more effective preventive strategies. 2013 artículo científico 1555-7960 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=437542091007 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4375 MEDICC Review application/pdf Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba MEDICC Review (Estados Unidos de América) Num.1 Vol.15
