- Alcohol: Friend or Foe? Ricardo A. González Medicina Cuba athero Alcohol sclerosis risk factors Popular belief has it that alcohol, particularly red wine, protects against atherosclerosis and associated cardio- and cerebrovas- cular conditions. That presumption motivates this paper, which describes the mechanisms underlying the J-shaped risk curve for alcohol use, with bene ts for vascular disease risk at low con- sumption levels and harmful effects—both directly on the user and indirectly on the bystander—at higher levels. The importance of further exploring alcohol use in patients with cardiovascular risk factors and of intervening to modify non-social use of alcohol to prevent serious adverse health consequences is also addressed. 2011 artículo científico 1555-7960 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=437542104010 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4375 MEDICC Review application/pdf Medical Education Cooperation with Cuba MEDICC Review (Estados Unidos de América) Num.4 Vol.13
