  • Determinantes Socieconómicos en la Lucha contra la Malaria en Honduras: ¿Qué Sabemos? ¿Qué Funciona? María Victoria Avilés José Cuesta Salud There is little worldwide knowledge on the socioeconomic determinants of malaria, a tragedythat has transcended the sanitary arena to become a developmental problem. Evaluatingconcrete public interventions provides useful information but falls short of a proper andextensive knowledge of which socioeconomic factors (both at household and communitylevels) are most closely associated with differentials in the incidence of the malaria;preventive and curative practices; and knowledge of efficient treatments and publicinterventions. This study builds that stock of knowledge for Honduras, a country with highlevels of malaria and poverty. In doing so, a pilot survey is designed and collected among 29communities in nine municipalities across the country in August 2004. The analysis of theinformation indicates that affected individuals show marked socioeconomic differentials, although these are more associated with location, gender and social infrastructure thanincomes. The incidence of malaria is sensitive to effective policies, among other things, because population at large knows existing treatments and when these are initiated, aretypically completed. There is therefore a need to improve the efficiency of interventions morethan their coverage. Also, there is plenty of room to improve hygienic behaviour andinstitutionalize medical practices in highly infected areas. 2006 artículo científico 1659-0201 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=44640101 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=446 Población y Salud en Mesoamérica application/pdf Universidad de Costa Rica Población y Salud en Mesoamérica (Costa Rica) Num.1 Vol.4
