- INDUSTRIAL ECOLOGY A NEW PATH TO SUSTAINABILITY: AN EMPIRICAL REVIEW Felichesmi Selestine Lyakurwa Administración y Contabilidad Energy Resource Materials Environment Sustainab ility The precise understanding of the link between industrial ecolog y and sustainability is vitally impor tant for a continuous environmen tal performance. In this study, an intensive review of industrial e cology principles, its application area s and the extent to which indus trial ecology has been applied was documented. It was observed that the effective application of industria l ecology is critical for sus tainability, since the industry is the main polluter of the environment. It was further inferred that, there is inadequat e applicability of the industr ial ecology principles by developed countries. Thus I hypothesized that, th ere is a great opportunity for new investment in this field considering the absence of modern means for the liq uid and solid waste manageme nt. For example, improper incinerati on of wastes such as hospital w astes, and the electrical and electronic equipment was perceived to br ing health problems in the near future. Therefore, it is time for t he governments in both developed and developing countries to incre ase the applicability of industrial ecology, for sustainable social , economic, political and environmental performances. 2014 artículo científico 2236-269X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=449544335006 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4495 Independent Journal of Management & Production application/pdf Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de São Paulo Independent Journal of Management & Production (Brasil) Num.3 Vol.5
