contents MORTALITY AMONG YOUNG NICARAGUAN IMMIGRANTS TO COSTA RICA : AN APPLICATION OF GEOGRAPHICALLY WEIGHTED STATISTICAL REGRESSION Roger E. Bonilla Juan B. Chavarría Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas homicides Costa Rica immigration spatialcorrelation Geographicallyweightedregression (GWR) This paper applies a geographically weighted statistical r egression (GWR) model to young Nicaraguan immigrant homicides in Cost a Rica during the period 1998-2008 and identifies possible covaria tes. The pa- rameters for the GWR model are: Y i ( g ) = β 0 ( g ) + β 1 ( g ) x 1 + β 2 ( g ) x 2 + . . . + β k ( g ) x k + ε, which may be obtained from the solution of β ( g ) = ( X T W ( g ) X ) − 1 X T W ( g ) Y. The GWR model is a more adequate model than the classic models , such as the log-linearPoisson model. In the GWR model, poverty was the most significant variable. The map ofthe estimators associated w iththe percent- age of poor households suggests that the relationship betwe en poverty and mortality by homicide for young Nicaraguan immigrants is st ronger in the Caribbean region and neighboring zones. When the GWR model w as run for homicides among young Costa Ricans, this effect was not o bserved, as it was among Nicaraguan immigrants. 2014 artículo científico 1409-2433 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=45331282007 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=453 Revista de Matemática: Teoría y Aplicaciones application/pdf Universidad de Costa Rica Revista de Matemática: Teoría y Aplicaciones (Costa Rica) Num.2 Vol.21
