Báez Morales Geología ashes acid rain Poás volcano La Vieja River volcanic gases Abstract: According to interviews applied to local inhabitants, ashes covered the upper basin of the Vieja River in the Alajuela providence of Costa Rica between the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s. For the individuals interviewed, there is no doubt that the Poás volcano produced the ashes. However, historical documents point to two big volcanic events that could have impacted the upper basin of the Vieja River. These events are: the 1953 eruption of the Poás volcano and the 1963 eruption of the Irazú volcano. Despite the events referenced in these documents, the inhabitants sustain that these volcanic events did not produce the ashes in question.
