contents The proton momentum distribution in water and ice G.F. Reiter J. C. Li J. Mayers T. Abdul Redah P. Platzman Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas Deep Inelastic Neutron Scattering (Neutron Compton Scattering), is used to measure the momentum distributionof the protons in water from temperatures slightly below freezing to the supercritical phase. The momentumdistribution is determined almost entirely by quantum localization effects, and hence is a sensitive probe of thelocal environment of the proton. The distribution shows dramatic changes as the hydrogen bond network becomesmore disordered. Within a single particle interpretation, the proton moves from an essentially harmonicwell in ice to a slightly anharmonic well in room temperature water, to a deeply anharmonic potential in thesupercritical phase that is best described by a double well potential with a separation of the wells along the bondaxis of about 0.3 Angstrom. Confining the supercritical water in the interstices of a C60 powder enhances thisanharmonicity and enhances the localization of the protons. The changes in the distribution are consistent withgas phase formation at the hydrophobic boundaries and inconsistent with the formation of ice there. 2004 artículo científico 0103-9733 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=46434117 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=464 Brazilian Journal of Physics application/pdf Sociedade Brasileira de Física Brazilian Journal of Physics (Brasil) Num.1 Vol.34
