contents Simulating a Chaotic Process José R. R. Barbosa Celso Grebogi Antônio M. Batista Ricardo L. Viana Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas Computer simulations of partial differential equations of mathematical physics typically lead to some kind ofhigh-dimensional dynamical system. When there is chaotic behavior we are faced with fundamental dynamicaldifficulties. We choose as a paradigm of such high-dimensional system a kicked double rotor. This system isinvestigated for parameter values at which it is strongly non-hyperbolic through a mechanism called unstabledimension variability, through which there are periodic orbits embedded in a chaotic attractor with differentnumbers of unstable directions. Our numerical investigation is primarily based on the analysis of the finite-timeLyapunov exponents, which gives us useful hints about the onset and evolution of unstable dimension variabilityfor the double rotor map, as a system parameter (the forcing amplitude) is varied. 2005 artículo científico 0103-9733 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=46435109 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=464 Brazilian Journal of Physics application/pdf Sociedade Brasileira de Física Brazilian Journal of Physics (Brasil) Num.1 Vol.35
