- Power-Law Distributions for the Citation Index of Scientific Publications and Scientists Hari M. Gupta José R. Campanha Rosana A. G. Pesce Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas The number of citations of a scientific publication or of an individual scientist has become an important factorof quality assessment in science. We report a study of the statistical distribution of the citation index of bothscientific publications and scientists. We give numerical evidence that Tsallis (power law) statistics explains theentire distribution over eight orders of magnitude (10¡4 to 104). Also, we draw Zipf plots in order to analyze thestatistical distribution of the citation index of Brazilian and international physicists and chemists. The relativelysmall group of Brazilian scientists seems more adequate to explain the dynamics of the citation index. In thiscase, we find that the distribution of the citation index can also be explained by a gradually truncated powerlaw with similar parameters. We finally discuss possible mechanisms behind the citation index of scientists andscientific publications. 2005 artículo científico 0103-9733 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=46435612 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=464 Brazilian Journal of Physics application/pdf Sociedade Brasileira de Física Brazilian Journal of Physics (Brasil) Num.4A Vol.35
