contents Optical Properties of Carbon Nanotubes under External Electric Fields C. G. Rocha M. Pacheco Z. Barticevic A. Latgé Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas Single band tight Carbon nanotubes Optical properties binding approximation We study the optical properties of carbon nanotubes within the single-band tight-binding approximation. Thegreat number of one-dimensional-like subbands of the nanotubes lead to typical van Hove singularities on thelocal density of states. When a tube is under the influence of a laser beam, optical transitions are allowed betweenVan Hove singularities and they can be observed experimentally in absorption spectra. External magnetic andelectric fields modify the energy spectrum of carbon nanotubes inducing changes on the optical phenomena atlow frequencies. Results for the inter-band absorption coefficient are shown for nanotubes under an additionalexternal electrostatic potential for parallel light polarization. This is an important problem to understand sincelow energy laser beams are being used to identify the chirality and diameter of the tubes and their electroniccharacter. 2006 artículo científico 0103-9733 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=46436356 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=464 Brazilian Journal of Physics application/pdf Sociedade Brasileira de Física Brazilian Journal of Physics (Brasil) Num.2A Vol.36
