Stentiford Computación self SOUR heating Solivita® green wastes Four different tests to assess compost stability were compared during green waste composting in windrows ata large-scale composting plant. The tests used were: germination index (based on seed germination); SOUR(specific oxygen uptake rate, respirometric method based on O2 consumption by the microorganisms); selfheatingtest (reflecting the energy output from the aerobic process); and Solvita® (a commercial maturity testbased on CO2 and NH3 production). These methods have been identified previously as suitable parameters toestablish the end-point of the composting process and results were compared to the typical process parameterswhich include temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, moisture content and volatile solids. SOUR was foundto give a useful indication of the degree of stabilisation of organic matter during the first stages of thecomposting process. Solvita®, was found to reflect more the degree of maturity of the compost, and that wasmore useful at the later stages of the composting process. This study showed that SOUR and Solvita®provided fast, simple and relatively unsophisticated methods to monitor compost stability and maturity atlarge-scale composting plants processing green wastes. 2005 artículo científico 1665-529X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=46790203 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=467 Ingeniería application/pdf Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán Ingeniería (México) Num.2 Vol.9 |
