contents Properties of Polyelectrolyte Solutions as Determined by the Charge of Counterions Barbara Hribar Vojko Vlachy Multidisciplinaria (Ciencias Naturales y Exactas) ion colloids thermodynamics Polyelectrolytes ion correlations Several experimental results published in the last decadeare clearly inconsistent with the classical DLVO theory of colloid stability. These experiments are supported by theoretical studies suggestingthe existence of an attractive force between equally chargedmacroions which is not of van der Waals origin. This paper is a partof an ongoing project applying computer simulations to understandthe basic properties of highly asymmetric electrolytes. The primitivemodel for –12/+1, –12/+2, and –12/+3 electrolyte solutions wasexamined using the canonical Monte Carlo method. The results show,in agreement with previous studies, that the valency of counterionsplays a crucial role in determining the structural and thermodynamicproperties of polyelectrolyte solutions. In solutions with trivalentcounterions the equally charged macroions form clusters that are stableagainst dilution and are not substantially affected by addition of aneutral component. Also, a relatively large concentration of addedsimple electrolyte is needed to modify the structure of the solutionand to partly ‘dissolve’ the clusters. The strong correlations amongions in solutions with divalent or trivalent counterions are also reflectedin low values of the osmotic coefficient 2000 artículo científico 1870-249X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=47544107 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=475 Journal of the Mexican Chemical Society application/pdf Sociedad Química de México Journal of the Mexican Chemical Society (México) Num.1 Vol.44
