- Statistical copolymers of methacrylic acid derivatives with hydrophobic spacers and N,N-dimethylaminoethylmethacrylate: New associating polyampholytes Rosario Santos Rosas Karl Friedrich Arndt Angel Licea Claveríe Multidisciplinaria (Ciencias Naturales y Exactas) pH association Polyampholytes hydrophobic self sensitive copolymers Two series of statistical copolymers containing N,N´-(dimethylamino)ethylmethacrylate (DMAEM) and comonomersderived from methacrylic acid with three and five methylene-units asspacers, were prepared by free radical-copolymerization followed byselective saponification. These statistical copolymers preparedshowed strong self-associative properties as revealed by viscosity, static and dynamic light scattering studies. The aggregates formed inaqueous solution show classical ampholytic behaviour with aggregateexpansion both in acid and alkaline conditions and aggregate contractionat intermediate pH-values, near the isoelectric point of the system. The contraction of aggregates is shifted to higher pH-valueswhen the content on hydrophobic acid comonomer is increased. Theaggregates formed are stable to sonication above a concentration of0.9 g/L and merge to larger structures at very high or very low pHvalues.A conceptual model is proposed that accounts for theobserved association behaviour of the copolymers. The statisticalampholytic copolymers studied are an easy to prepare alternative toblock-copolymers for the formation of nano-sized aggregates for differentapplications 2006 artículo científico 1870-249X https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=47550405 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=475 Journal of the Mexican Chemical Society application/pdf Sociedad Química de México Journal of the Mexican Chemical Society (México) Num.4 Vol.50
