  • What motivates non-traditional students to choose social work as a major/profession? Raphael M. Mutepa Ciencias de la Información Non Code of Ethics social work majors traditional students socioeconomic status Non-traditional students are a growing population in higher education, yet our appreciation of the unique factors that prompt them to choose Social Work as a major have not increased. In this qualitative study, 26 non-traditional students attending a small public university were interviewed about their decision to choose social work as a major and as a profession after graduation. Results indicate experiences varied among the participants. Non-traditional students experienced differing levels of motivation, campus involvement, and participation in social activities from their traditional counterparts. They generally declared that they came to social work to serve the disenfranchised and they also reported a social support network consisting of family, peer, and institutional support that increased their successful completion of degree requirements, even though these networks were not readily available to most non-traditional students interviewed in this report. The classroom offered a ray of hope for the engagement of non-traditional students, an opportunity to strengthen student identity and draw connections across the multiple worlds where these students reside. The implications of this study show the importance of recognizing the needs of nontraditional students, as well as giving them a support system to allow a more enjoyable college experience. 2013 artículo científico 1692-5858 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=476655656011 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=4766 Encuentros application/pdf Universidad Autónoma del Caribe Encuentros (Colombia) Num.2 Vol.11
