Here, the historical origin ofsymbiosis as a lifestyle in marine crabs (genus Petrolisthes)from the eastern Pacific was examined, and the evolutionaryrole of intra-guild interspecific competition in explaining thisecological trait was explored. A previously publishedphylogenetic hypothesis for 29 species of Petrolisthesgenerated by Minimum Evolution and Maximum Parsimonymethods of inference (using sequences of 16s rRNAmitochondrial DNA as a genetic marker) was used asframework for this analysis. When the lifestyle of eachspecies was mapped onto the phylogenetic tree forPetrolisthes, a free–living habit was inferred to be theancestral character state and symbiosis appeared to evolveindependently at least twice in this group. Crabs withsymbiotic associations occur in temperate waters in thesouthern hemisphere; Allopetrolisthes spinifrons inhabitingsea anemones, and Liopetrolisthes mitra inhabiting seaurchins. A comparative analysis by independent contrastssuggested that interspecific competition is not important inexplaining either the evolution of symbiosis or the occurrenceof less frequent partnerships between Petrolisthes crabs andother macroinvertebrates. On the other hand, the adoption ofa symbiotic lifestyle has important consequences for thesocial life of crabs.
