- Anthropogenic pressure indicators associated with vessel groundings on coral reefs in a marine protected area Sachiko Hayasaka-Ramírez Leonardo Ortiz-Lozano Ciencias de la Tierra coral re efs vessel groundings pressure indi cators marine p rotected areas Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano Historical information was co llected on vessel groundings in t he Parque Nacional Sistema Arrecifal Veracruzano (Veracruz Reef System National Park, PNSAV) during the periods 1902–1945 and 1 970–2010 to generate specific press ure indicators associated wi th these events. Information on 126 ve ssel groundings was gathered, and the cause, specific location, s eason, and type of vessel were a nalyzed. Three indicators were generated: stra nding pressure, annual pressure, and pressure per site. The hi ghest number of vessel groundings occurred in 1925 and on the Anegada de Adentro re ef, the most impacted in both p eriods. The most common causes o f strandings were human error a nd northerly winds ( Nortes ). Small vessels were the ones that impacted the most against t he reefs. The indicators sho wed that despite technological advances, pressure caused by gr oundings in PNSAV continues to o ccur at a medium level.
