It is captured incidentally by the eastern Paci fic purse-seine tuna fishery an d in coastal areas by artisana l fisheries. Although it is consi dered a highly migratory species, only few studi es of its movements are availa ble. In this study, the behavi or of the common dolphinfish was analyzed by means of acoustic telemetry at t hree locations within La Paz Ba y (southern Gulf of California) from summer to autumn 2013. Aco ustic transmitters were attached to six individuals and they were tra cked for periods of up to 48 h. Every hour, vertical profiles o f temperature and bathymetry were made. To determi ne the effect of biotic (sex) a nd abiotic (water temperature a nd depth, thermocline depth, hou r, and bathymetry) variables on the hor izontal and ver tical movements of tagged organisms, generalized additive mixed models were app lied. The results showed a tendency of hor izontal movements to the southw estern zone of the bay; two indi viduals crossed from the easter n to the western side. The average speed was 0.51 m s –1 . The vertical movement s showed that the i ndividuals spent 80% of the time above 34 m depth, of which around 45% was spent in the upper 10 m of the water column. Dur ing daylight hours they swam in shallow waters (upper 10 m) and at night they performed deeper dives (73 m maximum depth). Biotic and ab iotic variables influenced both types of movements; however, ba thymetry and temperature largely ex plained fish movements. 2015 artículo científico 0185-3880 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=48043157003 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=480 Ciencias Marinas application/pdf Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Ciencias Marinas (México) Num.4 Vol.41
