- Spatial characterization of the fish eries in the Avilés Canyon System (Cantabrian Sea, Spain) Antonio Punzón Juan Carlos Arronte Francisco Sánchez Ana García-Alegre Ciencias de la Tierra Fisheries fishing tactics Avilés Canyon System vessel monitoring systems spatial distribution of fishing effort Marine protected areas are one of the main tools in ecosystem-based fishery management. This approach requires analyzing the role of fisheries in the ecosystem by, for example, identifyi ng fishing tactics and analyzing th e spatial distribution with suf ficient precision to allow us to determine whether fi shing activities and the habitat or ecosystem to be protected can coexist spatially. In the Avi lés Canyon System (Cantabrian Sea, Spain), we dete cted 6 different gears and 17 fishing tactics were identified by a non-hierarchical classificat ion technique (CLARA). The spatial dist ribution of demersal fishing acti vity is strongly affected by the topography of the study area and the large presence of rocky ground. There is a clear spatial segreg ation between gear types, mainly due to the operating requirements of the gears an d the distribution of target species. This minimizes conflicts be tween different components of the fleet. The fishing tactics targeting pelagic sp ecies were mainly located on the coast and shelf, while those targeting de mersal species were used on the sh elf and slope. Longline fishing tacti cs are those that had a more restricted spatial distribution. 2016 artículo científico 0185-3880 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=48049436002 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=480 Ciencias Marinas application/pdf Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Ciencias Marinas (México) Num.4 Vol.42
