- Analysis of antioxidant capacity and bioactive compounds in marine macroalgal and lichenic extracts using diffe rent solvents and evaluation methods Félix Álvarez-Gómez Nathalie Korbee Félix L Figueroa Ciencias de la Tierra lichen extracts macroalgae Antioxidants bioactive compounds Natural extracts of macroalgae are widely recogni zed for their antioxidant properties. In this work, the antioxidant capacity of various aqueous and hydroalcoholic extracts obtained from red a nd green marine algae and from one marine lichen collected from different sites in southern Spain (interti dal and estuarine waters) was e valuated by different methods: AB TS free radical scavenging ass ay, DPPH assay, and β-carotene bleaching method (BBM). Contents of total lipids , total carbohydrates, and UV phot oprotectors with antioxidant capacity, such as mycosporine-like amino acids and phenolic compounds, were de termined. Among the extraction so lvents, the highest extraction yield was observed in H 2 O and 20% MeOH (v/v). The highest antioxidant activity was foun d in the extracts of the red macroalgae Hydropuntia cornea , Gracilariopsis longissima , Halopithys incurva , and Porphyra umbilicalis , whereas the lowest activity was detected in the green macroal ga Ulva rotundata . In general, the antioxidant activity was higher using DPPH th an BBM and ABTS. Even so, the ABTS assay is an easy and quick test that provides a comprehensive view of the entire ext ract in both the lipophilic medi um and hydrophilic medium. The antioxidant activity was related to the composition of bioactive compounds and synergistic action is not discarded. The biotechnological u se of macroalgal extracts with high antioxida nt capacity is discussed. 2016 artículo científico 0185-3880 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=48049436004 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=480 Ciencias Marinas application/pdf Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Ciencias Marinas (México) Num.4 Vol.42
