contents Effect of potassium on moringa plants growth in nutriente solution Ricardo Almeida Viégas Hugo Vieira Lúcia Helena Garófalo Chaves Ana Carolina Feitosa de Vasconcelos Biología potassium Moringa oleifera ion translocation The work was carried out to evaluate the effects of K+ rates on the initial growth as well as onthe partition and accumulation of this element in roots, stems and leaves of moringa (Moringaoleifera Lam.) plants. A pot (0.5 dm3) experiment was carried out under greenhouseconditions using river sand as substrate irrigated with nutrient solution twice every day. Theexperiment that was a completely randomized design had six treatments and three replicates. The treatments consisted of nutrient solution free of K+ (control) or supplied with 2, 4, 6, 8 and12 mM of K+ as KCl salt. After germination and the period necessary for the plants to stabilizein conditions of the experiment they had been irrigated with K+- nutrient solution treatmentsduring 30 days. The experiment was harvested 80 days from transplanting. K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+contents in roots, stems and leaves were determined. Through the growth analysis the leafmass ratio, the efficiency of K+ translocation and use were calculated. The results haveshowed that Moringa oleifera was not responsive to the K+ external concentration above 2mM. The K+ accumulation in stems was higher than in roots and leaves. The treatments hadnot influenced on the translocation efficiency of K+ throughout the plants. Finally, the plantsshowed to be more efficient to use K+ under conditions of a lower concentration of this ion inthe nutrient solution.
