ON LABORATORY TESTSEggplant capsules have been used by the population to reduce cholesterol. Studies with animalsindicated significant reduction in total cholesterol or LDL cholesterol; however inhumans the results are not conclusive. Due to the presence of anthocyanins with confirmedantioxidant activity in the eggplant, interference might be possible in the laboratory tests.In vitro interference has been analysed on glucose, cholesterol, triglycerids and uric aciddeterminations. The tests have been performed with commercial dry eggplant extract, addedto the commercial calibrator serum in supratherapeutic concentrations and after that, in therapeuticconcentrations for the analytes that presented significant interference in its supratherapeuticconcentration. As a control, pure serum was used, and then starch, quercetin orsolven were added. In the serum with non treated extract, significant interferences havebeen detected on glucose, triglycerids and AST determinations in supratherapeutic concentrationsand in therapeutic concentrations on glucose. In another stage, were performed withthe capsules content after a gastric digestion simulation, also in both concentrations. In thesupratherapeutic concentration, interference in all analytes was detected, and in the therapeuticconcentration, only on glucose. Some controls showed unexpected interferences.
