Castro Ciencias de la Tierra seismicity in Sonora 1887 Sonoraearthquake Basin and Range province The regional seismicity in the Basin andRange Province of Sonora, México, near theepicentral region of the 3 May 1887 Mw 7.5earthquake was studied. Body wave arrivaltimes recorded by the local network RESNES(Red Sísmica del Noreste de Sonora) and tworegional broadband stations of the RESBAN(Red Sismológica de Banda Ancha del Golfode California) network were used to locate theseismic sources originating between 2008 and2011. Preliminary hypocenter coordinates werefirst determined with the program Hypoinverse(Klein, 2002) and then relocated the initialcoordinates with the source-specific stationterm method (Lin and Shearer, 2005). Thesame procedure was used in a previous study(Castroet al., 2010) to locate the earthquakesoriginating in the same region between 2003 and2007. I also present in this paper a depuratedcatalog of events recorded from 2003 to 2011.Most relocated events cluster near the faultsthat ruptured during the 1887 earthquake.Additionally, I document seismicity along Basinand Range Province normal faults south ofthe 1887 rupture, such as the Villa Hidalgoand Granados faults and the faults boundingthe Bacadéhuachi basin. The region of thelargest population center, Hermosillo, appearsto be seismically quiescent. This observation issupported by a lack of entries in the catalog ofthe International Seismological Centre (ISC) ordocumented historical seismicity in that area. 2015 artículo científico 0016-7169 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=56832992007 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=568 Geofísica Internacional application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Geofísica Internacional (México) Num.1 Vol.54 |
