contents ENSO phenomenon and toxic red tides in Mexico José Luis Ochoa Ciencias de la Tierra HABs El Niño “Red tides” marine biotoxins toxic phytoplankton El Niño provides a partial explanation of the spectrum of marine biotoxins (red tides) on the coast of Mexico. Over 500human poisoning cases with 20 fatalities in the last 25 years, and mass mortalities of fish, sea birds, marine mammals, and marineturtles have been documented. However, the eventual effect of El Niño on the incidence, frequency and severity of harmfulmicroalgal blooms is uncertain. Because of geographical position and socioeconomical conditions, the impact of harmful microalgalblooms in Mexico will be severe, and a study of red tides is justified. 2003 artículo científico 0016-7169 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=56842322 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=568 Geofísica Internacional application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Geofísica Internacional (México) Num.3 Vol.42
