Wood Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas SUN: CORONA RAYS: STARS STARS: CORONAE ULTRAVIOLET: STARS TECHNIQUES: SPECTROSCOPIC Ultraviolet emission line ratios have long provided powerful diagnostics for thedensity, temperature, elemental abundances and ionization state of astrophysicalplasmas. With the current generation of X-ray satellites, these techniques can beapplied to X-ray spectra. It is important to remember that any such line ratioprovides an average value along the line of sight, and di erent diagnostics willprovide di erently weighted averages.Several assumptions are often made implicitly when emission line ratios areanalysed. In particular, the optical depth is generally assumed to be negligible. Thispaper considers some examples of the opportunities provided by photon scatteringfor new diagnostic tools, and it considers the dangers of applying the standardmethods when the optical depth is signicant. 2000 artículo científico 0185-1101 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=57100908 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=571 Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica (México) Vol.9
