contents Photoionization of galactic halo gas by old supernova remnants Jonathan D. Slavin Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas RAYS: ISM ISM: CLOUDS GALAXY: HALO ISM: GENERAL SUPERNOVA REMNANTS We present new calculations on the contribution from cooling hot gas in oldsupernova remnants to the photoionization of warm ionized gas in the Galaxy. Weshow that the emission from the hot gas in cooling supernova remnants (SNRs)is soft ( E 20 eV) and, as a result, the eciency of conversion of supernovaexplosion energy into ionizing photons is high, 30 { 40%. Given this high eciency, supernova remnants could be responsible for up to 50% of the emission measureobserved for the warm ionized medium in the Galaxy. Our model ux is alsoconsistent with the di use soft X-ray background at high latitude and with softX-ray observations of external galaxies. We consider the ionization of the cloudsobserved towards the halo star HD 93521, for which there are no O stars close tothe line of sight. We nd that the observed ionization can be explained successfullyby our model ux. 2000 artículo científico 0185-1101 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=57100963 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=571 Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica (México) Vol.9
