contents Vertical shear of the galactic interstellar medium Robert A. Benjamin Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas ISM: GENERAL HYDRODYNAMICS The detection of UV absorption, 21 cm, H and other di use optical emis-sion lines from gas up to ten kiloparsecs above the plane of the Milky Way andother galaxies provides the rst opportunity to probe the rotational properties ofthe ionized \atmospheres" of galaxies. This rotation has implications for our un-derstanding of the Galactic gravitational potential, angular momentum transportin the Galactic disk, and the maintenance of a Galactic dynamo. The available ev-idence indicates that gas rotates nearly cylindrically up to a few kiloparsecs. Thisis in contrast to the expectation that there should be a signicant gradient in rota-tion speed as a function of height assuming a reasonable mass model for the Galaxy. For example, for a vertical cut at galactocentric radius R = 5 kpc in NGC 891 byRand, the rotation speed is observed to drop by 30 km s from z = 1 to 5 kpcand is expected to drop by 80 km s Magnetic tension forces may resolve thisdiscrepancy. Other possiblilities will be examined in the near future. 2000 artículo científico 0185-1101 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=57100965 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=571 Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica (México) Vol.9
