Röttgering Física, Astronomía y Matemáticas 262) REDSHIFT GALAXIES: HIGH GALAXIES: JETS GALAXIES: HALOS The radio galaxy MRC 1138-262 at z = 2:16 is most likely a brightest cluster galaxy in an early stage ofevolution. Here we present observations of the luminous emission line halo and the stellar components ofthis radio galaxy. Optical narrow-band imaging shows a very extended ( 160 kpc) and luminous Ly halo.Infrared narrow band imaging reveals a much smaller H halo with a morphology very di erent from thatof the Ly halo. We advocate a model in which the inner part of the halo is photoionized by direct AGNillumination or by UV photons from young stars. Far from the nucleus ( 25 kpc), there is a region of greatlyenhanced Ly emission. At this location, it is likely that shock ionization is important as indicated by a bendin the radio jet. Spectroscopy of several continuum clumps in the halo shows that, although there are strikingdi erences between the emission and absorption features of the spectra of various regions, they have propertiessimilar to those of Lyman-break galaxies. This is further evidence for a scenario in which massive galaxies formhierarchically from smaller building blocks. 2002 artículo científico 0185-1101 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=57101335 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=571 Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica (México) Vol.13
