The diagenesis initiated by silicification, sapropelic, in an environment of high permeabilityand hydraulic conductivity. At progressively higher depths, with decreasing permeability andflow, and higher alkalinity, kaolinite was transformed, via interstratified kaolinite/smectite, to 2H2Osmectiteplatelets, and volcanic glass was directly transformed to smectite lamella. The mudstonesare constituted by 2H2O-smectite. In the smectite, cation replacement was in the tetra- and octahedralsheets, but the site of the charge is largely in the octahedral one. Layer charges vary between0.2-0.9, some within the range of vermiculite. The clay minerals form across the sedimentary sequencea continuous non-uniform phase of heterogeneous composition and variable physical behaviorthat would influence the stability of the bulk sediments. 2002 artículo científico 1026-8774 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=57219104 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=572 Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Geológicas application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Geológicas (México) Num.1 Vol.19
