contents Responses of planktonic foraminifera to the emergence of the Isthmus of Panama Masako Ibaraki Ciencias de la Tierra Ecuador Pliocene Pleistocene off Costa Rica Planktonic foraminifera Pliocene-Pleistocene planktonic foraminiferal assemblages of the Esmeraldas section innorthwestern Ecuador and of Hole 1039B off Costa Rica are analyzed. In the Esmeraldas section,an abrupt cooling of the sea-water temperature is recognized between 3.35 and 3.95 Ma, inwhich Neogloboquadrina spp. and intermediate water dwellers increase in abundance. In the sectionoff Costa Rica, the sea-water temperature declined just before 4.2 Ma, when planktonic foraminiferabecome absent, but increased afterwards as evidenced by abundant occurrences in Zone N22 tothe Recent. These faunal changes are considered to be responses to the emergence of the Isthmusof Panama. 2002 artículo científico 1026-8774 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=57219302 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=572 Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Geológicas application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Geológicas (México) Num.3 Vol.19
