contents Comales of Tzompantepec and paleosols: a case study Yolanda Ramos Galicia Thomas Poetsch Claudia Hidalgo Moreno Sergey Sedov Ciencias de la Tierra weathering illuviation buried paleosol clay accumulation ceramic production Use of paleosols as the source of material for industries and handcrafts in past and present is oneimportant aspect of applied paleopedological research. We studied in Tlaxcala State, Mexico, a stratummined for traditional ceramic production to determine whether it is a paleosol and which propertiesmade it appropriate for this handcraft. Morphological, micromorphological and pedochemical datashowed that this stratum has properties of a buried, well developed Luvic Andosol. It has much higherclay content than overlying soils and sediments, due to pedogenetic processes: weathering of primaryvolcanic minerals (especially volcanic glass) and clay illuviation. We suppose that the suitable ratiobetween amorphous components and crystalline clay provides the combination of properties desirablefor elaboration of ceramic. 2003 artículo científico 1026-8774 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=57220309 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=572 Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Geológicas application/pdf Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Geológicas (México) Num.3 Vol.20
