Rodríguez Medicina Drug use flunitracepam The use of flunitracepam (Rohypnol) has been recently spreadamong the population; several research information sourcesdemonstrate this fact: epidemiological studies, treatment centerreports and, seizure statistics. Likewise, its extensive popularityamong certain groups, mainly of adolescents, has becomea great health risk due to its indiscriminate use. The mainpurpose of this paper is to present some qualitative researchdata about the context in which this medication is used. Theinformation was obtained from individual interviews and focusgroup sessions with 38 drug users. Results show that adolescentsare important consumers, not only for experimenting,but also, and in a more accentuated manner, for customaryuse. A great range of delinquent behaviors result from thisaddiction, the participation in street fights, rubbery, rape andillicit drug trafficking. Another important finding was the greatdemand of this drug, which is illegally obtained by stealingand buying prescription books, assaulting drug stores andbuying it at clandestine laboratories, among others. Finally,another important finding is the generalized perception thesedrug users have about this drug.
