Bibliographicreviews show that a set of psychological reactions appearfrequently, and that sometimes these require psychologicalintervention. Unfortunately, nowadays crime problems andother forms of violence are prevalent, so there is a strong needfor research on this respect.This paper shows the psychological effects in Mexicans,derived from their experience of being burglarized at home. Aqualitative study was developed with victims of this crime. Taperecorded interviews were made in twenty informants onemonthand six-months after.The interviews were based on a thematic guide developedby considering the symptoms of the post-traumatic stressdisorder, as described in the DSM-IV, and also by exploringother manifestations experienced by the informants. Theanalyses were done according to the characteristics of thehouse-burglary and the reactions developed by it, includingthe symptoms of such disorder.Results showed that house burglary is experienced mainlyas a severe violation or intrusion of their intimacy. The morecommon symptoms were the memories and the psychologicaldistress when exposed to similar situations. The usually avoidthoughts and feelings related to the experienced burglary.Another frequent reaction is their concern for the future, andthe prevalence of irritability and hypervigilance. Most of thevictims experienced sadness and blue feelings.The comparison of the symptoms one month and six monthsafter, showed that although in general most of the reactionsdecreased with time, some of them persisted, producing muchdistress in the informants.
