contents El papel de la melatonina como modulador de la organización del citoesqueleto Gloria Benitez Medicina Melatonin calmodulin cytoskeleton protein kinase C mechanism of action Melatonin is a highly lipophilic hormone that crosses the lipidbilayer of cellular membranes. It causes multiple cellularresponses in unicellular organisms, plants, and vertebrales. This hormone conveys photoperiodic signals to all organismsand recently it has been describes that it functions as a freeradical scavenger. The mechanisms by which melatonin causes pleiotropiccellular responses have been partially disclosed: Melatoninbinds to plasma membranal receptors coupled to bothadenylate cyclase and phospholipase C pathways. It also bindsto orphan nuclear receptors of the retinoid family. Moreover, melatonin binds and modulates the activity of two intracellularproteins calmodulin and protein kinase C. This mechanism isrelated to ancient physiological processes phylogenetically wellpreservad, such as cytoskeletal rearrangements. In this paperI review the evidence supporting that melatonin modulates theorganization of the three main cytoskeletal components:microtubules, microfilaments and intermediate filaments. Also, the current knowledge about the mechanisms by which thehormone modulates cytoskeleton organization and its possiblephysiological consequences are presented. 2000 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58212303 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.1 Vol.23
