contents SPECT cerebral y enfermedad de Alzheimer: una revisión Marisol Castañeda Juan Carlos García José Antonio García Luis Miguel Gutierrez Feggy Ostrosky Medicina SPECT Alzheimer’s Disease activation studies functional neuroimaging neuropsychological assessment The Single Photon Emission Tomography (SPECT) is one ofthe recent neuroimaging techniques that contributes withinformation about the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Thepresent paper presents a description of the SPECTmethodology and reviews the contribution of cerebral SPECTstudies in Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Several studies haveshown a pattern of bilateral parietotemporal hypoperfusion inAD. This pattern of rCBF enables to distinguish between ADand normal subjects with a sensibility of 70% to 100%, and aspecificity of 87% to 100%. The SPECT is also a fundamentaltechnique for the differential diagnosis for AD and otherdementias like vascular dementia, Parkinson’s Disease,Huntington Disease and others. Several studies have shownan association between neuropsychological performance andrCBF, specially when studying patients with languageimpairments, apraxia, semantic memory impairments andattentional deficits. SPECT imaging studies conducted whilethe patient is engaged in a cognitive task or under sensorystimulation are referred to as activation studies. Activationstudies afford unique opportunities to explore brain metabolicchanges related to specific cognitive operations and toestablish hypothesis of the neural networks supporting verydiscrete cognitive functions. We conclude that SPECT has thenecessary potential to become a reliable diagnostic andresearch instrument for AD. 2000 artículo científico 0185-3325 https://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=58212306 en http://www.redalyc.org/revista.oa?id=582 Salud Mental application/pdf Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz Salud Mental (México) Num.1 Vol.23
